At its core, Velociti Inc. functions like the fundamental concept in kinematics from which it gets its name: it's a force that guides companies from every industry in the direction of a tech-based future.

Deryk Powell, president of the Riverside-based project management company, told the Kansas City Business Journal that the business was founded on two beliefs that have helped propel the company for 25 years:

1. Every company is a technology company.

2. Technology is great when it works. When it doesn't, it can be a real problem.

"When the technology revolution was just beginning 25 years ago, we looked at (the market) and saw there was a big void," Powell said. "There were technology providers that focused on hardware and software that all had a very similar message: 'we've got this amazing hardware and platform; check out our innovative solution.' But nobody was saying 'This technology is fantastic theoretically, but it has to work.'"

That's exactly where Velociti found its niche: making those innovations a reality by focusing on the design, deployment and support of various technologies.

Founded in 1994, Velociti is unique in that it does not provide hardware or software and instead helps companies capitalize on the investment they've already made, something that may not be part of a client's core expertise.

"We're kind of like the final mile in one of these (technology implementation) projects," Powell said. "You can have a fantastic theory as to how technology is going to work, but then somebody has to do this final mile of services to actually make it work. And that's where we fit."

With more than 350 full-time employees — including 175 based out of its Riverside office — Velociti works with clients in industries ranging from transportation to health care on technologies from robotics to artificial intelligence.

Velociti has helped YRC Worldwide Inc., an Overland Park-based freight shipping company (Nasdaq: YRCW), maximize its fleet productivity by managing solutions for driver safety and retention, routing capabilities and consumer demands.

The company also has worked with Merriam-based ShotTracker LLC to help the sensor-based system provide real-time performance feedback in large arenas.

"A big portion of our R&D and our market analysis is looking for what the next cool technology is. ShotTracker is a great example of that," Powell said. "We're always looking at what's next what's cool. Because our customers expect us to be educated and prepared to handle those technologies when they come up."

Powell sees Velociti as a "trusted adviser" to small and large businesses as "their technology roadmap evolves over time."

"We've experienced significant double-digit growth year-over-year and certainly in the last three to five — but really from inception," Powell said. "Our projections going forward are also quite aggressive and quite bullish because of the idea that every company is a technology company."

He said the company's growth has been purely organic in the past, but targeted acquisitions could be a possibility in the future as it continues to respond to innovation and adapt to an interconnected world.
