Border States Electric (BSE) was looking to implement a flexible electronic logging solution that could adjust for the variety of vehicle types utilized throughout its fleet as part of their effort to comply with the impending ruling by the FMCA’s e-log mandate and driver safety recommendations. After selecting the JJ Keller E-Log System powered by Encompass and DriveCam powered by Lytx for Driver safety, the logistical challenge of installing multiple devices in 330 vehicles of varying types across 80 locations became apparent. Additionally, Border States Electric wanted to schedule training of the new systems simultaneously with the installations to minimize downtime and maximize productivity as well as user acceptance.

Velociti Inc., a global provider of technology deployment services headquartered in Riverside, MO, was able to provide Border States Electric with a comprehensive deployment solution that included project management, scheduling concurrent installations and training, inventory management, installation services, and real-time testing and verification.

Velociti began by piloting mounting options to ensure the correct solution was in place. With the variety of vehicle types, which included International and Kenworth Tractor Trailers, Ford and GMC Pick-Ups, and Dodge Vans, it was paramount to determine the best mounting solution for consistency across the wide-range of dash types. This also allowed Velociti to do a comprehensive time-study using the selected mount to build the comprehensive schedule for deployment.

Once the study was completed, it was determined that multiple phases would be required to meet the complex schedule and scope of the project. Since Velociti’s technicians are trained on a wide range of technology solutions, they were able to install the DriveCam units simultaneously with JJ Keller E-Log system, which consists of the ELD, the JJ Keller Compliance Tablet and the fixed mount. Due to the initial planning, Velociti’s team was able to complete the first 106 vehicles and conduct training across 21 sites in only two months.

Installation and training for the remaining 224 units across 59 additional sites are currently under way and will be concluded in 2015.

Velociti’s ability to provide a rapid deployment solution along with the flexible scheduling allowed Border States to meet the internal Training needs they desired for maximizing the benefit of their solution.

“Proper planning is essential to the success of any deployment solution,” said Deryk Powell, President of Velociti. “It’s a tremendous benefit to our clients when they allow us to jump in and figure out the best solution, up front, to achieve their desired results. Border States understood that and gave us the flexibility we needed to implement the right plan for them.”

“The people at Velociti are true professionals that provide quality workmanship, are extremely thorough and efficient,” said Mark Lester, BSE Corporate Operations. “When the need for contracted installation arose, Velociti really came through.”
