Deploying Wireless LANs in a large-scale public venue is a challenging proposition. The size of the venue, combined with the use of concrete, metal and glass construction, causes coverage to vary greatly within these types of facilities. The structure, however, is not the only challenge. Determining the density of users and number of devices is a critical step in ensuring system performance.

The network must be designed to support optimal performance as device and data levels fluctuate. Each device has its own Mac address, which consumes air time, an IP address and other network resources. According to a 2012 report released by Cisco, global mobile data traffic grew more than 2-fold in 2011, more than doubling for the fourth year in a row. Last year’s mobile data traffic was eight times the size of the entire global Internet in 2000, and average smartphone usage nearly tripled in 2011…
